McCain keeps walking around while Obama is talking. That seems a bit odd. I'm also kind of hoping to see McCain just level Obama with a blind side tackle, pop up and yell Maverick.
Discussion point #2, is the economy going to get much worse before it gets better?
Obama - No. I believe in the U.S. economy. We need to support middle class families. Not a great answer.
McCain - It depends. Get rid of the cronyism. Getting a little exceptionalistic with the 'Murican workers are the best ____ fill in the blank with anything. Weak sauce.
A little history lesson from Obama, regarding the Bush administration's ability to increase our national debt immensely and squander the Clinton surplus. To be fair, the GOP controlled the House and helped get the budget balanced, but the first six years of this decade have shown the GOP isn't quite the deficit hawk party they used to be.
First mention of EARMARKS 21 minutes in. Oh, number two only one minute later, oh and another in the next sentence. I love the fact that McCain seems to honestly believe that earmarks are near the top of the list of big issues right now. I'm guessing it falls to about 73rd on the average joe's list.
Oh god, I think we have just found the next two weeks worth of GOP ads... that's right: OVERHEAD PROJECTORS IN CHICAGO!!!
Obama pulled 9/11 out first. That has to be a first in a Dem-Rep debate.
Also, I hope everyone understands that McCain's spending freeze would do very very little, unless he is seriously considering freezing spending on entitlement programs and not giving a Cost of Living Adjustment to Social Security benefits.
What don't these two understand about sacrifice?
Seriously, neither wants to say that we need to:
1. evaluate spending priorities,
2. seriously discuss Social Security program standards (amount being paid in, amount paid out, and age of benefit),
3. seriously consider raising revenues... which means, oh god!! TAXES.
We really must realize some sacrifices are going to be needed. Let's do it trickle down style.
The wife doesn't think Obama is very coherent in this format. I have to say he isn't exactly stellar, but I still think he is beating McCain at his own game.

From what I've seen so far, this is taking on the tone of the first debate; McCain attacks, and Obama spends most of his time answering McCain's points one by one. I thought this would go poorly for him, because people like to see candidates go on the offensive, but it seemed to work pretty well for him in the first debate.

I have to admit the Barack slowly and deliberately answering each of McCain's offensive moves does seem to work better for him than I thought it would. Obama seems a little long winded this evening, but that gives him more face time, which plays well when you then see old fart come back on the screen.
Can't believe McCain had the temerity to list all the interventions he "wisely opposed," while conspiscuously leaving out Iraq, Obama handled that pretty well.
The Obama Doctrine; let's hope he explains it so Palin can understand it.

McCain's position on Pakistan makes zero sense at all. I read someone who said McCain actually agrees with Obama's position, but is trying to make up some other shit to differentiate himself from Obama. Like the previous answer, he has a glimmer of truth in his answer, but he can't explain it in any coherent way. "Speak softly and carry a big stick?" WTF?
I have to say the Obama statement about taking out Bin Laden if Pakistan won't makes sense, and should be clearly stated. Sovereignty only goes so far...

As much as Ahmadinejad (notice McCain didn't try to pronounce it tonight) has been a figure in this year's election, it's amusing to think he may not be president of Iran this time next year. Total number of Americans aware of this: 15.

As far as I know, most experts think Iran is still a number of years away from getting a viable nuke weapons program. IMO needless sabre-rattling just encourages Ahmadinejad's fringe base. Khatami apparently has a legitimate chance to win the next election, and he's a much more moderate figure. I think we have to wait and see the outcome of that election before we commit to any course of action there.
Debate over. I think Obama did much better on the foreign policy section; partially because there were more concrete answers in play. But I think he reviewed most of McCain's moves from the first debate and had better responses ready this time.
Obama's got a legitimate shot in Indiana. Being from a neighboring state, most of the usual GOP strategy of making the Dem candidate seem distant and foreign haven't made much of an impact. Plus, Indiana's mostly a social conservative state in an election where social conservative issues aren't in play.
I would be interested in reading your thoughts on Obama in Indiana. I know you don't delve into the electoral all that much, but you are on the ground...
I keep remembering Mr. K's classes as the Dow stays below 10K.
Something else that amuses me; McCain thinks nuclear power is the solution to energy independence and climate change, but doesn't think Iran should be allowed to enrich uranium. I guess we'll just have to accept Iran destroying the planet with fossil fuels instead.
